Problem with lowering
« on: 14 August 2007, 10:33 »
Hey everyone, yesterday I decided to change my shocks and springs for a spax -80mm drop that I bought from a mate for 40 quid, if it wernt so cheap I probably wouldnt have gone for such a big drop.

Anyway, the reason Im posting is I'm having clearance issues between the tyres and the arches at the front on full lock. They were catching like a bugger so I decided to remove the inner arch liners, cut away the plastic lip from the arch extension and hammer back the metal lip of the arch...this helped alot but the tyre is still touching on full lock and with an upcoming MOT, this will surely fail??

I've ordered some 195/45 R15 tyres for the fronts in the hope that this will give me that much need couple of mm

Pics to follow.

Cheers,
Andy

Ive used some of these in the past

http://www.demontweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=ROAD&pcode=S/FSF1315

Stops the car from bottoming out and gives it a smoother ride.

You might be lucky if the tester doesnt spot the rubbage

Ah yes, last time I saw them my dad was using them on the rear of the car for towing the trailer!  I was looking for them everywhere, I'll order me up a set.

Anywho, heres how the car is sitting at the moment, for some reason its only the drivers side that is touching the arch.

And yes, I know my tyre is uber bald, thats another reason I've ordered some new tyres.

Heres how the passenger side is sitting:

I know I could probably raise it a little with those spring inserts but does anyone else have this problem and if so what did you do to cure it?

Will fitting a 45 profile tyre help the situation?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy

I think your biggest worry will be them trying to test the brakes. My car is dropped on coilys by about 60mmish and it bottoms out onto the ground when dropping the front and back end into the brake tester.

I think the 45 tyres may just clear the arch

I had worried about that to be honest, my old fiesta was lowered 30mm and that even battered the bumper on the brake tester at my local garage. I was tempted to take the side skirts off for the MOT to avoid them being knocked off or damaged  :undecided:

Does the front splitter come off?

I read they wont raise the suspension...but surely if the inserts are wider than the gap in between the coils then it will raise it slightly yeah?

Thats whats I was counting on, problem is the front of my car will be 5mm lower to the ground

It raised one of mine a few mm. just enough to clear the wing

Worth a shot. Not too expensive
