Gears problem (stupid question?)
« on: 10 August 2007, 20:51 »
For ages I'd been finding it really hard to get 5th, then I lost it completely a while back and the car would always go into 3rd when I thought I was putting it into 5th. Changed the main shaft bush last night as it was completely knackered (and I really mean that - probably about twice the size it should be and cracked to buggery). Realigned everything when I put it back together (trial and error - me holding the stick as central as I could while my brother tightened the nut). Thought I had all 5 gears and certainly seemed to when I tried to put it into 5th when doing a lap round my road slowly (though maybe I didn't, 5th and 3rd wouldn't feel too different the spped I was doing). Came to drive on the motorway today and couldn't get 5th at all - seemed to have two 3rds instead if that makes sense(one where 3rd should be and one where 5th should be).

Is this just a case of needing more accurate alignment or is something else worn that needs replacing? If it is more accurate alignment, can anyone give me a link to that full size drawing of the alignment tool?

Car is a 1990 8v.

Cheers,

Andy

The plastic rods onto the box are quite common at failing iirc it's the shorter one of the two. That is a common solution for no 5th gear :)

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

Good call mate, looked at mine and the short one was indeed knackered, one end was practically split in half! Sorted now with a bodge in the form of a cable tie, but obviously it's gonna need replacing ASAP, do you have the part number for it (mines caked in sh!te and I can't really read it)?

Dolly - I'm not being cheap, but I was hoping to get it sorted this weekend and eBay would obviously take a while. Don't need it now though so it's all good :)

Cheers lads, however I've literally just replaced all the bushes which looked knackered (as I thought they were causing the problem) and am not really in the mood to pull the whole thing apart again, so really only want to get this single part (circled):

Cheers!
