Normal oil temp???

What's the normal oil temp for a MK2 GTi 16V, when warm mine seems to sit at about 98 to 100deg C (according to the MFA), Does this sound high?

It does not sound too high although it´s higher than mine, but mine is an 8V. Mine hovers between 88-92 on a warm day, and in Spain at the moment, thats every day! :grin:

I've got a mild modified '90 8v, and I sit about 98 at 70mph, down to 94 if I'm stuck behind a caravan  :rolleyes: If I'm having a spirited drive, hard accelerations lots of braking etc, then it can get to 104 on a warm day!

I'd say check the wiring if you think it's wrong, but if  it has correct oil level and is well maintained then I'd use the temp as a guide rather than an absolute figure, ie if it really goes higher than normal or doesn't warm up at all!.

About 100 ish is spot on for normal driving in a 16v mk2.

have a 8v 2ltr and on a hot day sat in traffic, around about 105-110... and on a motorway about 100... wouldnt say thats too far out but still could be cooler... might be cos my radiator is bummed...

Just taken it out again and after about 15 miles or so when fully up to temperature, the oil warning light comes on and I hear a warning buzzer. It goes off then happened again.

Oil temp is sitting at 100 deg, plenty of oil, engine doesn't appear too hot... What could it be?

If you got access to a parts washer and air line, I advise that you take the cooler off and give it a good clean through then air blow it through till dry, refit and give that a go, it may be scaled up inside, try some oil treatment, did it to mine and temps dropped 5 degrees. See how you get on.  :wink:

Just been reading the Haynes manual and it mentions a oil pressure warning system, there should be a 0.3 bar switch and a 1.8bar switch. Looking at the engine it looks like the 1.8bar switch isn't connected, looks like the switch with the spade connector has broken off.

Could this be the problem? If it is low oil pressure, what damage can you do? or what can be causing low oil pressure?

How old is your oil? If it is old then the viscocity would have decreased thus lower oil pressure. In this case, an oil change will cure the problem.
