Squeeks and rattles!!
« on: 23 February 2004, 11:18 »
:-\I have had my 1.8T  fo 6 months now on a 51 plate. I have now noticed a rattle coming from the back on the passengers side. I have removed the parcel shelf and it is still there. Any suggestions.
I also need to fix back the rear panel, as i did not notce it was loose. Where can i get some clips from, any suggestions.
My CD and radio also rattle, the garage have shoved felt pads and cards between the the drinks holder and cd player, but to no avail.
I also have an annoying rattle in my passengers door. Everytime i brake the 'door' clicks, and when i accelerate the door clicks.
Any help on these matters would be appreciated.

I'm on my second GTi now, I had many problems with dash noises and rattles from my first - something I didn't expect from a VW (especially coming from a Honda Vtec that was as solid as a rock) - Now on my second GTi and it is the same, I even have the knocking noise coming from the drivers door and the seats knock too.  VW said they couldn't recreate the noise  :-\ which I find hard to believe.

But worse still, I've had the car for a month and within this period on two occasions the steering has appeared to fail temporarily (i.e. car swerves as though driving on ice even though roads are dry, trying to correct steering has no effect, stop the car move on and it is OK again.)  AGAIN - VW said they couldn't recreate the fault and the ECU diagnostics picked up no faults - This I find worrying for one they didn't appear to care and two my wife is five months pregnant and they seemed perfectly happy handing me the car back for me to carry on driving around in.  Luckily I don't do much motorway driving and it has only happened twice, who knows, it may never happen again or maybe the next time it will be serious! - I have no confidence in the car anymore or with VW - The car had two previous owners so I'm always a bit wary of how it was treated.  I just want to get rid of it now.

On a final note I have ordered a new MK5 1.6 SE FSi from the dealership because I wasn't happy with the GTi they agreed to swap it for one of similar value. They had no more GTI's in of a similar value so I decided that with a family coming along and me worrying more about safety than performance I would opt for a new car that I know has no history.  So I've had to fork out more, but feel  this is the way to go for me now for peace of mind.  Will miss the Gti performance but I?ll have another one day.  Looking forward to getting the MK5 though ? Diamond Black ? Will post a pic when I get it (could be up to 8 weeks) and then I suppose I?d better find or create an FSi Forum !

Actually - I've had an Idea - And no, the burning rubber smell is my tyres melting...

....So that I can continue to post on here can somebody who runs the site add an extra section for FSi owners ?  ;D  Or should I just swap the badges on the back when I get it and pretend ????

Going back to your inital post though Rob - Is there a little bit of warranty left on the car or did you buy it from a dealer?  If so take it back and get them to look at it - If that fails then I suggest you do what I was recommended to do when I posted on this problem  - Turn your stereo up loud.

Its probably one of the cheap and nasty plastic clips on the window regulator that has failed. before long the other will follow and it'll be bon-voyage window into the door.  maybe worth a check.

My passed experiance is that things aren't ment to rattle and if they start to do so sometime is not right.

Any good motor facotrs should stock a whole host of clips, if not main dealers will at some rediculous cost.

Thanks number 6. Yes there is a couple of months left on my warranty, so will contact dealer to see if they can check the clip for the window regulator.
Yes like you i thought VW solid no rattles good build but feel that (especially on Mk4) is not the case.
Think i can rectify most of them - Rear panel, parcel shelf etc, but door - thats a dealer issue.
Hope you enjoy the mk5. :)
