I used to have 17x7.5 with 205/40/17 tyres with 40mm lowering springs, but am now running 14x8 195/45/14 front and 14x9 215/40/14 rear, and the car sits a lot lower, with a more noticeable stance, - check out the pics below to see the difference. They dont really do the new wheels justice, but you get the idea.

also the difference in performance from running the smaller wheels is huge throughout the range.
I don't own this anymore - I just can't be arsed to change the picture

I got my Steffans from Dubmeister, they are great wheels, but the alloy is very soft and its polished, not painted! so any scuffs are a pain to get rid of as you cant fill and repair! I paid about ?850 for mine, and that was with conti sport tyres

At the moment I have Wolfrace 'race elite' 15" wheels and 205/50/15 Yoko A520 tyres on my mk1. I would like to put some 4 pot calapers on there but that would mean at least a set of 16" wheels. What I really want is a nice set of BBS split rims but can you get them bigger than 15"?

Yeah you can get them bigger than 15" but they are rare and expensive. They are also unlikely to be in 4*100 fitment, most likely 5*100 (mk3/4 golf) or 5*130 (Porsche) so you would need adapters.
