MK2 16v Fan Blower
« on: 30 July 2007, 14:48 »
Hi Guys,

I bought a sexy oak green 92 reg mk2 16v  three weeks ago, and have spent a month getting it fully serviced.
One problem though...

Last week I took her to the mechanics for a cambelt and fanbelt change...
The mechanic changed this fine etc but on the way back home....when i put the blower fan on, the front air vents have very little air coming out? the feet and windscreen vents work perfectly?? and the fans are running behind the dash..

This is very confusing...it was all working perfectly before i got to the garage! The fans on setting 3 were pushing out a michale jackson "im bad" style power stream!

Could this have anything to do with the mechanic fiddling under the bonnet? (it was raining for abit and i suspect water may have got into somewhere it shouldnt)?

p.s:  i have checked the fusebox and the fan blower fuse was ok

Any help much appreciated please?

Thanks,

Goops

Shouldn't have anything to do with fanbelt and cambelt change.

If the windscreen and feet settings are working then either a cable or cog has come off the setting slide or the tubes that take air to the front vents have become disconnected somewhere. Very bizarre for that to just happen randomly, the tubes are stapled on very firmly!

The same motor powers all settings so if you get air out of the other vents its not that.

I can't imagine he had the dash out did he? Theres no reason to do so for the work you've listed.

Thanks for the reply!

I think you must be right mate.
I left the fan running on the motorway journey home and with a little fiddle on setting slide, a gentle breeze came.

I will open up the dash on the weekend to have a look for missing/moved cog. Am i right in assuming the only way to have a look is to open the dash? aka the screws running on the underside from glove box to drvers side?

Thanks for all your help mate, much appreciated!

G

You should be able to look at the mechanism by just removing the centre console.

Could you point me in the right directions with which screws to go for to remove just the centre console?
p.s I know i sound thick (probably because I am)

Thanks,

G

  It's no bother mate I've learnt loads in the few years I've had a Mk2!

This link should give you all the info you need in the Body and Interior section:

http://www.iol.ie/~kilkennyhockey/BentleyManual/

It's an online version of the Bentley manual that some kind person hosts, very useful! It's an american manual so for left hand drives, no bother just reverse things and its fine.

nice site! I just came from my lunch, and had it in da car so started fiddling with the vents control console. It was like a lego piece, the handles came off with a slight tug, i pulled off the speed control the same way and then pulled the console face out like a stereo!

I did not see anything missing etc to be honest. Il try and pull the whole thing out on the weekend!

Thanks for the help, dont wana go to a mechanic as theyl charge me 40quid or sorts for labour!

cheers for all the help!

The bit that directs which vents the air flows to is on top of the transmission tunnel behind the centre console. It's where the wires from the control slider come to an end and is attached to the mechanism with the cog i mentioned.

Still no idea why it would suddenly give up though! You haven't got the vents closed or anything silly like that?
