I=Pod control - am i right or wrong?
« on: 30 July 2007, 10:22 »
just been to drop my car off for its cruise/parking sensor install( i had to tell them about the 150 quid offer on the cruise...they orignally tried to sell it me for 230 quid fitted) and noticed ipod controller on offer, so thought why not...

asked about how it controls it and the sales manager dude says, 'its full ipod control through your head unit'..told him i had nav and he said cool, no problem.I asked him was he sure and he said yes.....

i asked him to show it me working and he only had a golf match with ipod in it, so we pluggged it in....full contol my arse...all it would bring up was track number...no name, track title, f**k all....

fistly the guy got on my tits by trying to blag it( he conceded at the end he didnt know a great deal about it)...

so now i'm f**ked off cos i want full ipod control through my nav and cant have it...

or can i?

anyone got any ideas?

after market H/U is the only way I'm afraid.

VW have been pretty slow in taking up full iPOD functionality and MP3 players in general

don't think its possible with the standard vw head units. I have Ipod in armrest, and all I get is track numbers, and all you can select is playlists 1-6 that are represented as CDs 1-6. So you cant actually choose albums from the headunit, only the first 6 playlists.
If you do want a particular album, just remove Ipod, start playing album you want on ipod, reconnect it and it will play that album, you can skip through tracks as you want on that album - bit of a pain, but no worse than changing a CD! HTH.

thats right VW don't do full ipod control with their headunits, their cable just tricks the headunit into thinking the ipod is a 6 disc CD changer, only aftermarket like Kenwood or Pioneer do can display track names and pictures etc.

In fact its only 5 playlists, as track 6 is the entire library.

I had the Harman Kardon drive and play installed, pretty discrete and is true 'full control' of your ipod. Loads of places doing it for £50 as well which IMO is a bargain.

Where did you install it? Did you DIY it or pro install. Pics appreciated...

I had it installed but have since had it out when I retro fitted my MFD2. It connects to the cd changer port via a 'connect2' box. You select tracks via the small wheel which mirrors the way the ipod wheel works and all the track/search info appears on the small screen which I had installed behind the big vent on the dash top. So far most peoples reaction has been that they didnt realise VW installed such cool stuff as standard, I have to point out its not a VW piece of kit. The screen is backlit blue and the actual plastics are the same tone of grey as the interior so its defo a good fit. Whats also good is you can still change the volume/mute from the steering wheel too without needing any extra kit.

Im sure Ive seen it in Halfrauds at £50 too and I think Motorworld have it on special at £50 at the minute too. Youd need the connects2 box as well, not sure on cost for that.
