90 spec 8v GTI newbie Q's
« on: 27 July 2007, 21:00 »
after 6 months of trying to find a budget 3door mk2 golf in Good nick i found one.. ill be picking it up sunday but i already have plans lol!...

i have some callipers carriers hoses pads and discs from a ibiza 20vt these are 280mm fitment so G60? .. are these going to bolt straight onto the 1990 8v gti
(origianly bought for an 2.0L 8v mk2 ibiza standard 256mm, now i have a mk2 ibiza 16v it has 280mm standard)

next id like a cam, it can be extreme as its not going to be a daily runabout, what kinda of lift should i be looking for, when cammed is it vital the ECU is programmed, and can they be programmed robustly or is it a case of shelling out for a megasquirt system which lets face it.. not cheap..

Lastly suspension reccomendations, currently on the Ibiza i have weitecs uprated front and rear with a 40mm drop all round. i paid £300 and fitted it my self, is there any other kits that would be reccomended at around this money as the suspension needs some attention on the Golf.

Thanks

For the brakes do a search, I think you need G60 hubs but late 16V or early mk3 gti might also work. Might as well do front bearings aswell. :undecided:

Not sure about the cam. If the car is completly standard then I'd simply follow rubjonny's tuning guide for digi's (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0), also replace any obviously old/worn parts, ie sparks, ht leads, distributer cap and arm. Also decent panel filter, oil + filter change. Then see how she runs. Exhaust is also something to do b4 cams, I would have thought, check out the Milltek ss systems they seem to be popular.

Suspension, depends what it's for/ how you wish to customise! If it's for cruising then go for a set of matched lowering springs and shorter dampers or if it's for track days etc then probably adjustable are the better option, but as someone once said..... 'you get what you pay for'.....very true! If you lower the car don't forget to adjust the front camber and the rear break bias valve.

Good luck

The car has a jetex S/S full system ive been told, weather thats manifold back (most likely) or a COMPLETE system including manifold i dont know, of course ill be giving it a service being a mechanic and all in the next couple of weeks.. I think your right with the brakes, i can use mk2 16v hubs or mk3 8v/16v.. but now ive got my eye on some 14"BBS alloys so they wont fit behind those.

Im in 2 minds about the suspension cant justify buying a coilover kit, dont know if u can pick coilovers for around £300 notes. im not too concerned about performance from the suspension as ill be using the ibiza as my track car.. i just want the stance lowish rolling on some smart BBS alloys ive found but not silly low on its belly that i cant clear blades of grass if you get me..

ive got some money spare at the moment so i hope to get things moving soonish, going to collect it in around 2 hours so ill post some pics up and you can all slate/appreciate it, whichever you choose :)

I bought my coilies from these guys, where good price at the time.

probably not worth getting cheap coilies, better to get a decent fixed setup?
