Steering wheel change - horn problem

Hi all

I've just bought a nice VW leather steering wheel with a small spline for my 1989 Mk2 with large spline adapter. So... following advice I've read on the forum I removed the large spline adaptor by hitting the steering column in with a 4lb knockometer which did the job. I then pulled the column back out to its fullest extent. Old plastic large spline wheel goes in pile of Mk2 bits in shed, new wheel goes on..... BAAAARP!!! The feckin horn is on full time 

Now this is presumably due to the wheel being too close to the contact on the column surround. The wheel is a genuine VW job and identical to the one removed, so that's not the cause. I can only assume that the large spline adaptor had a secondary function in providing a stop onto which the steering wheel butts when fully tightened, preventing it from going too far onto the column and shorting the contacts.

Has anyone had this problem? What do I need to do to replace the large spline adaptor's function? When I removed the large spline adaptor there was a spring behind it - I have left this in, though it appears to serve no function now.

When I changed my horn of to an after market make I had the same problem but mine turned out to be the actual horn button was constantly earthed to the boss kit so remained on, I just changed the button mechanism to another one and all worked fine, hope this helps as I dont know what your wheel is like might not work for you

i had to remove the wheel as it was off centre, put it back and... f**king BARRRRRP as u put it... the horn contact metal pad is now on the passanger seat  .. i can only assume i hadnt put it back on properly?

if the horn doesn't sound when the metal contact from the horn push is removed, then the problem is with the horn push, see if you can figurte out why its short circuiting
If its a proper VW wheel you can use pretty much any mk2 1.6+ wheel horn push as they're all the same size
