212 bhp from a standard Gti on BP Ultimate.
« on: 27 July 2007, 09:19 »
Yesterday whilst wating for the other half at the doc's I was going through the waiting room magazines which are usually a pile of sh1te, but obviously GP's massive pay increases these days aren't all bad as they've obviously got more dosh to spend on things - like cars! As a  result the magazine table was covered in Autocar and Evo mags which makes a nice change.  Looking through a recent copy of Evo (which I don't normally read - but wiil now do so!) they were comparing  different fuels using a standard 197 bhp Gti.  Basically according to them BP ultimate (although I think it's only 97 RON) was making the Gti pump out 212 bhp with big increases in torque, next best and almost as good was Tesco 99 RON then it was Shell Optimax followed by the other majors.
I wonder what we could expect from the old 'R' and '30' on BP Ultimax if thats this case? I use Shell Optimax at the moment but I wiil now stick to BP or Tesco - depending on which one of the locals I'm driving past and with Tesco 'every little helps'!

If memory serves that was quite a long time ago. I remember it tho, was an interesting read.

EVO is the best car mag by the way, what ever it says is right lol.

When I was talking to AMD a year or so ago, they reconed most GTi's had around 208 BHP straight out the box.

None of the Tesco's by me have the 99ron stuff
Engine seems to run well on Optimax though... will have to try the BP stuff soon.
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

Went to Santa Pod GTI Fest last month which is 100+ miles from home.  MFA recorded 40.9 mpg going using Sainsburys Super UL.  Filled up with BP ultimate before coming home at the same average speed and got 44.1 mpg.  Car does run a little smoother but that could be physcological

Not scientific, but I thinks its good stuff

Yes, im sure this has been talked about already, these "super" fules to give more MPG, but then again you are paying quite a bit more per liter for it.

If memory serves me right, someone on here pointed out that the test was using Shell Optimax which was 97 RON, since then Shell have changed to V-Power which is 99 RON. Clever bit of marketing by BP perhaps.

....I would take that with a large pinch of salt. Most Mk5 GTI's plotting 197 bhp on a rolling road is much more the case.

Also, gaining as much as 12 bhp just from (non racing) fuel, without even hardware mods such as intake and exhaust, is bollox in my opinion.
