Help! timing belt disaster
« on: 25 July 2007, 16:25 »
Hi, i am in the process of changing my timing belt.  All went swimmingly until it came to start her up.  It's turning over but refusing to start.  Normally it starts first time - not anymore D'oh!  I must have got something out of alignment but dont know what.

Need to get it going tonight as its my GF's daily drive and she is back to work tomorrow

What position do the crankshaft sproket, camshaft sproket and intermediary need to be in when belt is fitted..

:panicking:

thanks

You must make sure the bottom and the top marks are both in line.

You dont say what car it is ??

thanks,  it a mk2 golf 8v 1990.

I used the "relative system" for changing the belt out of the bently manual.

Think it is the bottom sprocket which  is out of line cos I didnt pay alot of attention to it when I took the vibration pulley off.  The pulley has a notch in it but the pulley can fit on in 4 different ways at 90 degree angles.

Only done a 16v golf before so presume the basics are the same.

With the belt off you must make sure the bottom mark is lined up and the top mark also,be carfull when tightening the cam belt tensioner up as the bottom pully can move a tooth ,once your happy that both top and bottom marks are lined up and the belt is to its correct tension, attach a spanner to the bottom pully and give it at least 1 complete turn before you attemt to start it making sure its free and doesnt jam .

Hi, Its a while since I have had to solve this one so I might be a bit sketchy   Check your camshaft pulley and crankshaft pulley marks line up to the marks on their closest cambelt cover sections .  If they do then its the intermediate shaft that is out.  This is easy to get wrong because it spins freely    To sort this out look here under timing http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0

Good luck and dont panic.  The 8v is hard to break because the pistons cant hit the valves if you have got it wrong

Check your intermediate shaft for correct positioning as this runs your distributor. With the cam shaft in the correct position in relation to the crankshaft, and thus TDC on cylinder number one, the rotor arm should point to a grooved indentation in the distributor body. If no line up, no start!

Hey, if you take the flywheel inspection plug out you can line the flywheel marks with No.1 TDC, if you then put your pulley on the notch on the engine side of it lines up with the mark on the intermediate shaft, you can check this as your rotor arm should be pointing at ht lead for No.1, with the notch on the back of the cam-pulley lined up with top of the cylinder head. The tensioner needs to be tightened anti clockwise so the belt isn't have too close to the cam pulley. Haynes has a good method, hope it goes well, shouldn't worry too much as the hyd tappets will take it for the valves if you are out of position when you crank it over.

im no expert as ive only done the job once but the crankshaft pulley should only fit on one way round. therefore all you need to do is line the notch on that pulley with the indent in the intermediate sprocket.

i know for certain on my car i couldnt have attached the crankshaft pulley in any position other than one it was meant cos i spent ages trying to find that position!!!

ITS A TRAP!
