Rock and roll!!
« on: 20 February 2004, 10:39 »
The handling on my 91 8V (140K) seems anything but sharp.  When I weave it left and right it seems to wallow and eventually catch up if you know what I mean.  At speed it also feel very spongey.  I guess with this sort of mileage things do get worn, just don't want to spend money changing the wrong parts!  Any ideas???

sounds like dampeners. do you get thrown around a bit if its windy? does the suspension bounce when you push down on the wing?

Does feel a bit unsure in squally weather at speed.  The front bounces both sides a bit more than the expected up then centre, the back hardly seems to bounce at all.

I'd say a combination of front bushs and *funked* shocks ...

If you got the money good excuse to change / lower the whole lot!

It doesn't cost a fortune and not hard to do at all ....

i had to change the dampeners on a mk2 driver and one had a removable dampener and one i had to change the whole strut cos the dampener was fixed. i dont know whick one was the OEM one tho? i would change the front dampeners if i was you mate. nice and cheap from german and swedish.

I'm no mechanic, how much are talking about for the fitting of new shocks (do they come with springs?) to the front (what about the back?).  Do I just opt for the standard shocks or is there some better option.  I don't want to lower or particulary change the original driving characteristics.  Cheers Jez.

91 will need a new complete strut, and not inserts like on pre 89 golfs

i got my struts from raceland, they where quite reasonably priced.

fitting varies from garage to garage, best ring round for a few prices

worthwhile changing the top mounts also

and no you dont get springs with the struts

I have gas charged inserts on my car (1991 model Gambit?), but the odd thing is they look pretty new, would you expect the front dampers to be softer from the back?

What do the top mounts do?
