Hey folks,

I'm thinking of getting a GTI for my next car so thought I would join up. My name is Mark I'm 24 and I live in Fife, Scotland. I've only ever driven Ford since passing my test at 18 but I fancy something a little more reliable and I've always had a soft spot for german cars.

Pervious cars include:

1992 Orion 1.6 Ghia
1998 Mondeo 1.8 Zetec
2000 Focus 1.4 Zetec - Still have
1988 Escort RS Turbo - Still have
2006 Astra 1.7 CDTI - Still have

I'm thinking of getting a GTI Turbo next and have a few questions that I hope can be answered, instead of creating a new thread I'll ask away in here.

Is the 1.8T, 150 BHP or 180 BHP?
Is there also a 2.0T available?
Do they all come with Recaro Interiors?
Has anyone managed to get a vent to atmosphere dump valve working?
Does anyone do a quad headlight conversion for the Mk4?
How easy are the engines to tune?

Sorry for the 50 million questions and the long winded intro but I cant seem to find any spec sheets on the 1.8T

Cheers

Mark

Im not an expert on 1.8Ts by far but can probably answer most questions, sure someone will correct me if im wrong. Mk4 golfs had both 150 and 180BHP 1.8T engines fitted, not sure what the rules are for which got what tune but think anniversary ones were 180 and 6 speed.

Only the newer MK5 golfs were 2.0T

Dont have a clue about the dump valves

They are very easy to tune as far as i know, simple remap and your taking a 150 to around 200, from there on its standard turbo tuning i think along with more custom remaps. might be wrong though cos dont know much at all about turbo tuning. yet.

Hope that helps some.

Hi there!

Kinda new myslef, but thought I'd have a go at answering one of your questions (i'm sure I'll be corrected!)

I just bought a 2001 GTi Turbo - it has Recaro's in. I think I'm right in saying that later models didn't have them in, but replica VW seats which are practically identical.

Pretty sure the 1.8T is 150BHP too.

The Mk4 GTI had several engine options:

2.0 (8valve I think) under-powered, around 115bhp, non-turbo
1.8 20valve, 125bhp non-turbo
1.8T 180bhp (found in early 3rd and 5dr Mk4's, then replaced by the 150bhp model, so 180bhp only found in the 3dr Anniversary)
1.8T 150bhp (most common)
2.3 V5 150bhp
2.3 V5 170bhp
2.8 V6 204bhp (only as the 4Motion, 4wd)
3.2 V6 237bhp (R32)

The 1.8T is a fine engine, with plenty of performance parts available and tuning is easy enough. A remap should get you to 200bhp easy.
Not all of them came with Recaros, but the standard GTI seats are pretty decent anyway.
Never heard much about dump valves on the VW scene, though i recon they're a bigger deal on the Ford and Pug scenes.
I've not seen any quad headlight conversions for the Mk4 (there are plenty for the Mk3), but I don't think they'd suit the car. Though there might be some around. Angel eyes seem to be popular though.
Hope that helps. Try asking in the Mk4 section, as some people may not check the Newbie section as much.

Hi, the 1.8T didn't change for years all the specs were keep the same as the brochures pointed out in repetition, until the anniversary was launched with the extra 30hp and an extra gear, 3 doors were the only choice! Only 1800 of these were launched each with its own number. The anniversary came wth a choice of engines- either 1.9D(150hp) or the 1.8T(180hp), also fitted was 18" alloys with 312mm vented discs. But only came in 3 colours, black, red and silver!  :smug:
