german style plates

hi all im wanting to put GERMAN STYLE reg plates on my e30 (When it lands)
are these illigel in the uk.i dont wont to be on police camera action everyweek
being chased  :laugh:for having illigel plates .can anyone help

yes they are totally illegal and I believe you can now get penalty points as well as a fine for illegal number plates.

I've run German plates on both my GTI and my old BMW E30 325 and haven't had any problems yet despite having police behind me on the road. I also know a few police and none have a problem with them as long as the spacing is correct. If you look at section b of the legislation below it explains what's allowed;

VEHICLES REGISTERED AND NEW REGISTRATION PLATES FITTED ON OR AFTER 1ST SEPTEMBER 2001 (MANDATORY SPECIFICATION)

1. The plate must be made of retroreflecting material which, as regards its construction, colour and other qualities, complies with the requirements of -


(a) the British Standard specification for retroreflecting number plates published on 15 January 1998 under number BS AU 145d[13], or

(b) any other relevant standard or specification recognised for use in an EEA State and which, when in use, offers a performance equivalent to that offered by a plate complying with the British Standard specification,


and which, in either case, is marked with the number (or such other information as is necessary to permit identification) of that standard or specification.

2. Where the registration mark is displayed on the front of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a white background.

3. Where the registration mark is displayed on the back of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a yellow background.

Of course it's up to you 

Well considering german plates are black on white on the rear and not yellow, makes the rear plate 100% illegal!

You are lucky you have nice police where you live, as in london they can be total g1ts and will find any excuse to pull you.  So as nice at german plates look, its not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Characters must be 79mm high and 50mm wide with a stroke of 14mm.Inter-character gap is 11mm and the space between the two parts of the registration number is 33mm.The only font allowed is based on the "Charles Wright" font

Once again these regulations apply to number plates FITTED after September 2001 .So your car could be 1974 but it would still need to comply IF THE NUMBER PLATES ARE CHANGED.

the german ones are actually illegal, however the only point they fail on is the font as becuase its an easily readable font you'll probably get away with it^*

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001

its not exactly light reading however the following is off interest

characters must not be formed in any way described in paragraph (4) or in a manner which is similar to any of those ways.

    (4) The ways of forming characters referred to in paragraph (2) are their formation -

      (a) in italic script,

      (b) using a font, other than italic script, in which the characters are not vertical,

      (c) using a font in which the curvature or alignment of the lines of the stroke is substantially different from the prescribed font,

      (d) using multiple strokes,

      (e) using a broken stroke,

      (f) in such a way as to make a character or more than one character appear like a different character or characters.
