Vw service
« on: 18 February 2004, 12:50 »
To reopen an old topic. What the heck do VW do for a 40000 mile service on 1.8 T golf's to charge 265 quid?.

How much difference do's it make to resale values on the car to get them serviced somewhere else?

Could anybody please advise as I'm not sure on the value for money of VW service

Cheers :o

Main dealer service is a bit expensive, depends if you want the stamp or not.
That depends on how old the car is.

VW dealers are renowned for being very expensive. I only go there because of the warranty which expires at 3 years or 60,000 miles. I shall be doing the servicing myself after that. If you are not into DIY I would suggest visiting a VW specialist. I think the 40k service includes a brake check, which is why its more expensive.

Is there not now a ruling which doesnt tie you down to a dealer for servicing if you wish to keep your warrenty?
Its either in place now or will be soon, not sure myself.

garyM is quite correct, the EU have said that you can get your car serviced anywhere provided its ot the same standard as the manufacturer and keep your warranty.

this is good in theory but the "same standard" is a bit vague and in practice the dealers can kick up a fuss. I would just say you went and got the car serviced in locaiton X and the blighters didn't stamp it.

my car is just coming up to 3 years next month so no warranty to worry about. I had break fluid changed at 30000 mile service so might ask them to reduce the cost of 40000 service by leaving break fluid.

If I need anything doing on breaks will go somewhere cheaper anyway.

Only thing is I still suffer from power loss which the mechanic reckons is because I don't drive FAST enough! hmmm

The VW Warranty is notoriously inflexible and insists that you have all servicing work carried out by a VW Stealer. They are not renowned for embracing EU rulings as demonstrated by their dual pricing policy for new cars. You can buy warranties from reputable outfits like Warranty Direct that do not make stealer servicing a requirement, an option maybe when the VW Warranty expires.

Lee, sounds like a dodgy MAF Sensor to me.

Warranties such as warranty direct are a waste of money as they do not cover any consumables.
They will only prove useful if your engine or gearbox blows up, or it will cover things that are very unlikely to fail.
