Steering
« on: 18 February 2004, 12:27 »
I recently had to have two new front tyres on my MK3 16v as one had worn right down.  I have had the wheel alignment checked today by a garage with a proper four wheel laser machine.  Their verdict was that it was all "spot on".

Any other ideas as to why one tyre wore much faster than the other?  I am a bit worried for my new Eagle F1s!  I don't want to have to replace those within the next year!

Also my steering is feeling a bit heavy and frequently pulls to the left, i put this down to incorrect alignment but clearly there is some other problem.

I'd get a second opinion at another garage.

i think i might.  I just picked the car up and the bloke didn't charge me anything.  he said "i can't charge you, i didn't adjust anything"  which makes me think he didn't do a proper four wheel alignment.  Not that i'm complaining about getting something for free at a garage!

4 wheel alignment isn't really necessary for a front wheel drive car.
Just get the front wheel alignment checked.

Your tyre isn't catching on the inside of your wheel arch is it. when i first put 205/50/15 on the front, with full lock the passenger side used to catch??

i doubt it.  The tread on the old tyre was mainly worn across the centre.  Usually that is a sign over inflated tyres i think, but i check the pressure quite often and always keep it at 30psi.  I didn't think this was too much.

After speaking to an friend who was a vw mechanic i'm going to change the power steering belt this weekend.  He suggested this as a good (and cheap) place to start to solve the steering problem.  And it's also mentioned on another thread here.

I'll just have to keep a close eye on the tyres.

I don't think the rubber you are loosing is due to the pas belt.

I've just changed the front tyres on my mark 3 - I also had the wheel alignment checked and adjusted and was even handed a printout of the before and after readings from the laser equipment etc

However, on the first motorway i went on i noticed the car pulls to the left yet the alignment has all been checked - what else could this be? I have not had the car long and am fairly certain it has never had a shunt so the front end should all be straight

thanks, JB

No i'm sure it isn't, but hopefully it might help with the heavy steering and occaisional pulling.  Unfortunately due to other commitments (rugby, football, sleeping, pubs, etc) this weekend, i didn't get a chance to do it.  Still, there's always next week..........

My dub always pulls according to the camber of the road.  If the camber is sloping to the left, the car pulls to the left.   If sloping to right, it pulls right.   If on a dead flat surface, no pull either way.   When I first got it, I was convinced there was a prob as it was so sensitive to the road camber - let's face it, no road is dead flat so it is always pulling one way or the other.   But I've got used to it now and don't notice it.   Tyre wear is fine, so I guess nothing to worry about.   Probably not much help as yours seems to always pull the same way - just thought I'd throw my 2p's worth in! ;)
