Hot start issue (Not another one...)
« on: 09 July 2007, 20:37 »
I have a mk2 8v digi 2.0 (2e) and it has got a hot starting problem.

I know this has come up many times before but I have followed most of the ideas for resolving it but nothing seems to be working.

The car sounds like it is only turning over half a turn then just stops. Switch the ignition off and try again a few more times each time it only turns over half a turn, until eventually it will kick back into life. Not great if it stalls on a junction as I found out today. :embarassed:

-I have double checked all of the earth wires
-replaced the started motor with a new bosch part
-replaced the started motor bush at the end of the shaft
-cleaned the connection on the started motor
-made sure the battery is fully charged and the contacts are clean

but it still comes back to haunt me.

I have noticed that the coil is to hot to touch when this happens in fact most of the time, but I can not see how this will stop the engine from turning over.

I was thinking of replacing the battery incase it is not providing enough current but would like some ideas before I spend more money.

Any help appreciated, cheers.

Yeh I have got a Toad AI606. I think this is inside the cabin area under the dash, wouldn't it stop the engine from running completely if this was at fault?

this similar to what I had on my valver. The battery sounds like it is dead, doesn't turn the engine over easily. The battery is fine

I turned out be a combination, of my advanced timing and the high compression of my rebuilt bottom end and cams. I believe you can get around it by using a starter motor spline/gear from a MK3?

So if you're using a 2.0 2e (MK3??) engine and a MK2 starter, changing the spline/gear may be the solution

Or have I just talked a load of Kak???

I got around mine prob by retarding the timing a bit, a the cost of a few horses though!

When i had starting problems on an 8v it turned out to be an old alarm that at first looked disconnected, but actually wasn't!

It would either not turn over at all, think about turning over but not (like yours) or just fire into life straight away!   It pretty much always started first time if i hadn't driven it that day, but say i stopped for petrol or went to the shops it would be a b!tch to start after, giving the illusion of being related to the engine being hot!

That makes sense.

Shot in the dark here but could it be a faulty knock sensor picking up interference and advancing the timing? The sensor on my engine is a little tired and has lost a lot of the black cover and the cover on the wire is missing in places.

The spark timing is spot on but it sometimes pinks and miss fires when giving it some up hills.

I will have a route around tomorrow to see if the wiring is ok on the black box.

Isn't it a b!tch when that happens. My girlfriend was driving it earlier and stalled in a car park . Thankfully someone helped her push it back in to the parking space, but it is embarrassing.

have you checked the earth cable to the gearbox, sometimes taking it off and a bit of emery to make sure is right.

Thanks guys I cleaned the earth connection on the gearbox and had a rolling road tune at TSR and it is running perfect now, and no sign of the hot start issue. Fingers crossed.

Also had a kent cam and vern fitted while I was there.
