clutch & gearbox
« on: 05 July 2007, 13:57 »
Well the time to change the two is almost here!

does anyone have any tips or advice for the job of changing both the clutch and gearbox on my mk2 8v gti?

ive got a haynes manual and another workshop manual. it doesnt look to bad. however it does mention the use of 2 VW special tools. one is to align part of the clutch correctly which i think i can get away without by just using some vernier calipers and lots of patiance. the other is to hold the fly wheel still whilst you undo the bolts to hold it on. i dont hve this tool so im just gonna use a screw driver and a 18 inch breaker bar

so has anyone done the job without the use of the VW tools if so is there any advice on this front?

cheers for your help! this site is saving me lots of money!!!!!

(apart from certain people who sell broken parts in the parts for sale section  )

I found a big spanner on the crank pulley helps keep the flywheel still just be careful not to try too hard or you could bugger the crank. Also a long 8mm spline drive is useful to undo and refasten the driveshafts. Get someone to stand on the brakes whilst you undo them :)

on the brakes while you undo driveshafts right up at the gB? what if youre working solo?  :undecided:

you mean between the 2 nuts at an angle sorta thing to resist it moving, then use the right hand to undo the bolts or whichever way ya facing?

i got one of the spline bits from robiwill.. nice length

kool, theres plenty of ways around it then. i bought a set of spline sockets from halfords so the driveshafts shouldnt be a problem! just gotta wait for my clutch to turn up now! tick tock tick tock

ok heres the pic of the gearbox ive bought the code for it is 020 301 103

heres the pic of the gearbox that is in my car, i dont know the code as i cant get near enough to see it. i know it starts 020 though

spot the differance!!!
obviously you can see in the pics that the electrical connector is of a differant type. what is this for? does it need to be connected?

also what is this all about? these are on the box ive just bought.

the box ive bought cam off of a 1987 8v gti
mine is a 1991 8v gti

i dont wanna swop em to find that ive wasted my time! my clutch hasnt arrived yet so i probablt wont be doing it until next week

Hey, what clutch you getting, I got a LUK kit for my 87 gti 8v, only cost me 55 quid from my local parts supplier and its suuupppeeerrrbbbb!
The pics of the box you got don't look anything like the one i got on mine, don't know what the plastic pluggy thing is, the other easy - breather but the reverse light switch is where the breather should be with a plug going where the breather is!  Can't be something to do with the speedo as the drive is mechanical on these models transducers were put on mk3's onwards. Think you could be in for problems in the future with this, the box will prob work great but the reverse light has got me!!  :undecided:
Good luck
