Just thinking for the other side here but.
 How do you guys know what onlookers are thinking   . As an example people often look at modified noisy boy racer maxpower cars coming along the road the owners think people love them because they are getting looks when the onlookers 9/10 times are thinking look at that mess . Maybe some onlooks are also thinking something on the line He spent all that extra money on that, its just a golf

Theres so many mk5 GTIs round were i am now i miss most of them and if its black so the grill blends in i very rare notice them at all now. I have had one positive coment at the petrol station when i first got mine but now it seems to just blend into the background. When i bring the mk1 out though i nearly always get 'nice car mate' coments.
Mk6 GTI  &  Mk1 GTI
34 years of GTI ownership.

Thats exactly what I like about it, it is discreet.  Yet it is still a special car.  You only have to drive one to realise that.  It also has enough small details (honeycomb grill, skirts, flat bottom steering wheel...ect) to lift it from a run of the mill golf.

Personally, I had looked at the TT (not the new one), RX-8, 350Z as possible cars... out of them I chose the Golf GTi... it was just the best compromise between performance, practicility, affordability & quality...etc

Plus having come from a line of average cars (first car: Citroen AX GT, second car: Citroen Saxo VTR, third car: Skoda Fabia vRS (which actually was a much better than average car)) I have to say its a nice feeling being in the GTi!

... but now it seems to just blend into the background....

Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

Its easy to tell. i get alot of people nodding they head at me not just golf owners. I found this strange at first but now im use to it. As im young most of the people who give me a nod are young boys and gals.

Also, as my car is black, the red bit around the grill stands out a mile away and this is what grabs the attention. When im in a que i get people staring at the car. Its not common at all in my end so its something that alot of people havent seen and kind of sticks out from the other cars. Most people stare at the grill and the red calipers. The sports recaro seats with the tarton patterns also attract some attention. Although its a golf, its a different class of golf!

During the night the dials and satnav unit light up the car beautifully and this is what attracts people.

When i go to my local kabab shop i park right outside the door and people always walk around it and check it out. They like looking at the interior.

I've had alot of people ask me where i got the steering wheel from. I tell them its standard and they say "really" in shock.

Hi all,
I currently have a BMW 320i sport as a company car. It was up for renewal and my choice was 325i sport. I was told my budget had been dropped to around the 20-22k mark. The only car in my opinion worth having for that sort of money is the Golf Gti. I sort of chose it out of anger and a black one for a black day  I have not test driven one or seen one close up apart from in photos (stupid I know). You guys on the forums have cheered up cos from what you all say its a cracking car! Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when it arrives tommorrow morning. My main areas of concern are the build quality and the handling. What has given me some exitment is the fact I can get it Revo'd  to around 260hp.

build quality = excellant
handling = beautiful (its a treat in the wet also and i havent driven many cars which can do 70mph around a bend and still stay glued to the road )

they can be revo'd all the way past 300bhp

I have just come to my GTI from BMW 1 Series.

I REALLY REALLY wanted a GTI in the summer 2005 when I got my 1 Series, but at the time there were no discounts and there was a 4 month wait for a factory order. So I got the 1 series becuase two years ago the 120d was a quite a powerful 2.0ltr diesel and It ended up that I was also going to have to change jobs with more miles, so it made sense. After 20 months of ownership It just had to go. The build quality was poor, it squeaked, creaked and it was just wearing bad. BMW recently have gone down hill in my opinion.

To replace it I looked at new 3 series coupe, Seat Leon Cupra, Audi TT, Octavia vRS, Renaultsport Clio, New Mini Cooper S and Golf GTI. None of them could really hold a candle to the GTI.

I seem to get alot of attention with my GTI, a couple times I have gone for fuel and "boy racers" have come over and given it a good look over and everyone seems to know what it is. If I told people I got a Octavia vRS, most people wouldnt know what it is, even if its a Golf GTI but cheaper. Oh, and for the record it might have the same engine and chassis but it is not in the same league as a complete package or as somthing good to drive, it feels abit detached in my opinion.

Its just got that something about it that appeals, I think Jermey Clarkson said it was "all things to all men" and I think it sum's it up well.

Mines in Silver and in my opinion, with the 18's it does look rather good. It stands out with the black of the skirts and the grill with the little bit of red lipstick.  People respect it as well, Ive had mine 13 weeks now and I have had no one try and over take or have a little race at the lights cos they know its bloody quick.

Mk1 or Mk5 its a classic - and thats why its sold so well

My answer:- I wanted a hot hatch after 18 months of diesel ownership and after doing some research on the web and in magazines, I found most, if not all, road tests/reviews say that although not the fastest, most extreme, best value, best equipped hot hatch, the golf is the best one to own on a daily basis. After a test drive I was hooked and since purchase I have only praise for the GTI. Long may it last........
Before: GTI Reflex Silver, DSG, Leather, BBS VZ 18's, Cruise, Ipod. Now A4 Sline SE 220 Avant quattro.

I so hope you're right,, and Maxamus with the build quality and handling.
Spec is pretty basic,  Diamond Black, 18" Monza's, Mirror goes down when reversing pack, rear parking sensors.
