I have just come to my GTI from BMW 1 Series.

I REALLY REALLY wanted a GTI in the summer 2005 when I got my 1 Series, but at the time there were no discounts and there was a 4 month wait for a factory order. So I got the 1 series becuase two years ago the 120d was a quite a powerful 2.0ltr diesel and It ended up that I was also going to have to change jobs with more miles, so it made sense. After 20 months of ownership It just had to go. The build quality was poor, it squeaked, creaked and it was just wearing bad. BMW recently have gone down hill in my opinion.
To replace it I looked at new 3 series coupe, Seat Leon Cupra, Audi TT, Octavia vRS, Renaultsport Clio, New Mini Cooper S and Golf GTI. None of them could really hold a candle to the GTI.
I seem to get alot of attention with my GTI, a couple times I have gone for fuel and "boy racers" have come over and given it a good look over and everyone seems to know what it is. If I told people I got a Octavia vRS, most people wouldnt know what it is, even if its a Golf GTI but cheaper. Oh, and for the record it might have the same engine and chassis but it is not in the same league as a complete package or as somthing good to drive, it feels abit detached in my opinion.
Its just got that something about it that appeals, I think Jermey Clarkson said it was "all things to all men" and I think it sum's it up well.
Mines in Silver and in my opinion, with the 18's it does look rather good. It stands out with the black of the skirts and the grill with the little bit of red lipstick.

People respect it as well, Ive had mine 13 weeks now and I have had no one try and over take or have a little race at the lights cos they know its bloody quick.
Mk1 or Mk5 its a classic - and thats why its sold so well
