Noise when starting car? Normal
« on: 02 July 2007, 14:19 »
Hi guys, new member here.

For the last six or so months my 2.5 year old Golf Mk5 1.6 FSI has been intermittently making a horrible noise when i start the car.

The noise is a loud sort of rattling/scraping noise, which sometimes comes straight from turning the key or a few seconds after i turn the key. It can last anywhere between 1 and 3 seconds. Then the engine runs perfect as normal.

VW have fitted a new starter motor, no fix though, they now want to fit a new ignition switch.

The odd thing is it only started after i took it in for them to fix a dash rattle and a little while later perform a service, they had to recode the keys aswell.

The manual states that there is a noise that can happen sometimes to do with oil pressure when starting the car, would this be that noise? I thought it very unlikely, and surely VW would know about this.

Does anyone perhaps have any tips pr advice about this?

Cheers

you're in the GTI forum and we have 2.0 FSI turbo engines!

with all due respect, you are better off finding a 1.6 forum.

The only difference in the mechanics of the car is the engine size and the fact that it has a turbo, its the same car.

I think this problem doesnt lie in the engine, thus is still a valid question.

Give the guy a chance lol. Does it happen only when cold eg if you start the car after being out for a run does it do the same thing?  And welcome to the forum masterk

Cheers, it seems to only happen from cold (or at least when the engines been off for a while). I can start it ten times in a row and it will be fine but the next morning it may do it.

I take it this noise doesnt sound like the Oil pressurisation noise that is apparently "normal" mentioned in the manual to you?

Thanks

If it happens first thing get someone to stand at the front with the bonnet open leaning over the engine and see if they can hear were its coming from when you start it.
Could be any number of things and without hearing it myself i could not say what it is.
Could be alt bearings, alt belt slipping, cambelt tensioner, startermotor Solenoid, startermotor not disengaging due to itself or ign switch etc etc etc etc . Theres many things it could be.
