gearing affects insurance indirectly, through higher price of the vehicle. Effect is miniscule, other factors are more important.

I've just renewed mine... The best last year was elephant.co.uk at £350. The renewal was £500 and after shopping around, More than came out best at £380 (Protected no claims, 34, teacher, business use, 10,000 miles per year, me and wife, driveway, 06 GTi 5dr manual)
Elephant were excellent and I'd recommend them. More than seem OK, but they have the dreaded call centre in Bangladesh...

Nationwide and also Direct line  gave me a very cheap quote.

£668 , 10000 miles, garage, 23 year old with one fault claim in 2003 and 3 years no claim. Aint bad for someone my age and the car.

I didnt go with them in the end cos my insurance company (HSBC) matched their price so I would stay with them.

One tip I would like to share is, that some insurance companies only ask for claims history in last 3 years , while some ask for number of claims in 5 years. I had a crash 2003 (4 years ago now) and I found when I renewed my insurance, going to companies who ask for 3 years information obviously gave me a much lower quotes as far as they were concerned I hadnt had a crash. All insurance companies who asked for 5 years history, were very much more expensive.
Only really effects people who had crash over three years ago, but it might save you a few quid if in the same boat.

SWIFTCOVER.COM for me... I am 31, 10 years no claims, protected NCD, legal costs cover, driveway parking, 8k miles a year... £405.00... without legal and protected no claims it would have been approx £320...
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

I'm with More Than and have found them to be excellent. Sorted out a claim on my last car very quickly, although you do get an Indian Call centre . If you shout loud enough they put you through to an English person .
