tie rod broken?
« on: 01 July 2007, 13:31 »
I think my passenger's tie rod end is broken, i took it of the hub using the proper tool and today i tried to do the nut back up but when i try to do it up the thread bit just turns with the nut meaning i can't do it up. Is there a way round this or is it knacked. car is a non PAS model.

thanks

problem solved! the nut tightened up fine without the thread spining with the nut. don't know why though!

its connected to the ball joint so will spin....it has to be dry on the shank preferably and held against the hub to enable the nut to tighten..if threads are rusty etc or tight it tends to spin the actual balljoint so it has to be either held to the hub arm more or a combination of this and clean up your threads etc till it nips up.

Easy way for future ref. is to to jack the joint into the hub taking just a bit of weight then the nut should go on no probs, the pressure of the taper being pressed into the joint holds the shaft to allow the nut to tighten.
