For a car the shape of a Golf, ie a two-box hatchback (which is not as aerodynamically efficient as a three-box saloon) - to achieve 180mph on the flat, it would need around 500 bhp !!!

The legal stance on speedo accuracy is that they can never under-read, but can over-read by up to 10%, so for that reading of 180mph, the "minimum" genuine speed is 162mph.  It would still need a big hill !!!
