« on: 26 June 2007, 22:29 »
recently ive been looking at golfs again!im a clio owner! but previously had a 1,6 cl mk2 as a 1st car lol, ive been to look at a couple mk2 gti 8v's, because insurance on a the 16v is just shy of 800 quid more!

but couple days ago i did a quote on a mk3 gti 16v and the resaults were great! 1100 tpft for 2.0 16v at 18 nearly 19!? 0ncb bin driving year and half!i kno the mk2's are fun but at the moment im finding hard to find a decent 8v mk2! but there plenty of mk3 16v's!

soo whats your view guys! cheers great forum!

I'm as new to all this as you and I'll soon be looking for an 8v MkII.
There are some very cheap, clean, loaded Mk3s out there though.
If I needed a daily commuter I might go for the latter, but as I just want a budget toy I reckon a II is the way to go.
Look forward to hearing other views.

Golf GTI: good enough as it is

Hmm, well the MK2 is obviously more iconic and less common - if the money wasn't a factor I'd say go for that for sure, but as the insurance has forced you to an 8v if you want a mk2 then it kinda depends if you want style or performance?

If it were me I think I'd go for the Mk3 16v, as I've got an 8v at the mo and as much as I love it I crave more power all the time!! Also A good example will be easier to find, 'cos as you said there's loads about.

It's not an easy decision by any means though - as I said, style or power - take your pick!

everyday car a 16V Mk3 ABS brakes (mk2 brakes are not great at the best of times)  loads about good specs if you look you can find aircon leather and sunroof or even recaros. although avoid earlier ones as rust is a problem on sills etc the later ones 1996 N onwards are the cars to go for you can tell these by the oval side indicators.

as a car for weekends well MK2 gti 8v all day long a classic car and an investment for the future
