noobie!!!+ shall i buy a gti 16v????

alright, my brother has a mk2 gti 16v j reg, and he i was thinking about buying it off him, theres a few problems with it probably because it has been sitting for about a year, as far a si am aware the body work is in relatively good condition,first of all all the brake calippers have seized, the heater matrix is dead, and there is something wrong with the engine it wont run right, i think that the head gasket is gone, along with a couple of other things, there is probably a lot more wrong with it, i was just wondering if u guys had any input as in how much it is worth, i could probably do all the work myself, and if i get stuck a neighbor of mine is a mechanical genius when it comes to golfs

with all those probs that need sorted, I'd say its worth f-all!

All the probs are easily sorted tho, HG and brake calipers you can do easily. the matrix is supposedly the hardest/trickiest job on a MK2 tho! many will suggest you pay to have it done!

sounds like a good project, but don't pay too much for it I'd say max of £200 if the body work is sound, do l thework and it could be worth much more!

yeh thats wot i thought it is worth, so is the heater matrix a big job then???, the car is sitting at one of his mates sheds as my bro is in australia and will be for the next year or so, however his mate is sort of a freak when it comes to fiddling with golfs and especially mk2s, i asked him how long would it take him to put a new engine in it, a 2.0 8v, and to fit a new heater matrix and he said he could do it in a weekend easilly, there was one weekend that he took the engine out of his 16v put it in his mk1 caddy pickup drove it for a few hours got bored and put it back in his 16v and got it running and driving for work on monday morning!!!!!!!, and my brothers 16v also has coilovers i think they are supersprint or something like that not entiarly sure about that tho!!!

Definately don't be put off by the heater matrix, yeah it's a little bit fiddly but by no means difficult. The first one I did took me about 4hrs as I was taking my time and being very methodical, I reckon it could easily be done in well under half that once you know exactly what's involved.

only buy if the body work is sound. with that list of probs it could cost several hundred to get sorted properly depending on who you know. If it's been sitting for a year i presume it has no MOT or tax?
Not wanting to put you off the idea as it could be a great car when running, but be prepared to spend some money!
