Help needed - front passenger seat won't budge!
« on: 21 June 2007, 07:39 »
Morning all,

My front passenger seat has suddenly stopped wanting to slide forwards and backwards. The car is only a month old, so I was a bit surprised at it doing this. I've had a look under the seat to see if there are any obvious obstructions that prevent the sliding mechanism from working but it's all clear. The slide lever seems to lift OK but I don't think it's disengaging the release mechanism.

Does anyone have any idea/advice how I can free it up again? I don't really have time to take it back to the stealer at the moment as I've just moved house!

Thanks in advance

John

My first MK5 a GT TDi, didn't even have the cable installed from the factory, I could tilt the seats but they didn't slide forward, they would slide if I used the handle at the front of the seat while sitting in it, I was told it was not uncommon for these cable to be missed at the build stage.

Just a quick update from my stealer

Quote
Normally really tight at first, like most parts of the Volkswagen everything is a tight fit and sometimes takes a bit of use before they loosen up.

I would suggest  you try moving the seat whilst actually sitting on it. The combination of pulling the handle directly up and not at an angle and the weight and force from your legs should get the thing moving. Don’t try to hard it should start moving by doing this.

Also ensure the seat is fully locked in place by using the release handle on the top of the seat, whilst it is in the angled position try pushing or pulling the seat back and forth.

If this fails then your local VW dealer can investigate. I’ve not come across this problem before as its quite a simple release mechanism and therefore has less to go wrong.

So will try this but have a feeling that it'll be going back to the showroom!

Cheers

Quick update for you:

Took it to stealer last week and they said that the whole seat mechanism has jammed!!

It's booked in for a week in two weeks time because they are going to have to somehow remove the whole seat before looking at it due to the fact it's jammed where the release bolts are located!! I'm getting a hire car replacement but he said it won't be a GTI...
