Light steering?
« on: 15 February 2004, 15:37 »
I have been driving our other car a mondeo 98 ghia (sorry but its handy for the missus to cart the babs aroound in!!) for a few days and havn't touched the golf - trying to keep the mileage down ;)
but when I got back in the golf today the steering felt as if i was drivin on ice it was that light and it has not got power steering ??? It gave me no feedback at all and felt dangerous if anything

It passed the mot this month no probs so either its just come on like that or drivin a newer car for a while has spoilt me ::)

Is there anyway i could improve it by adding or mod or are yours light as well?? its a mk216v 1989 by the way

Hi mate, have you recently pumped up your tyres?

If the tyres are over pumped-up you will get light steering due the lower surface area, id check them matey  :P

I get a similar 'sensation' on my MK1 GTi - although when you are stood outside the car and wobble the steering wheel the front wheels turn straight away so I guess nothing is badly worn?

The only idea I have had (other than replacing the rack!) was to try adjusting it. In the Haynes manual it does look easy to do (just a locking nut/bolt set-up) but a complete b!tch to get to!

I'll let you know if I do it and what (if any) difference it makes - and how much skin I have lost off my knuckles!! ;D
