I was looking into campers myself a while back - I really wanted a split screen one, but to get one in really good condition seemed anything from about £18,000 up! Even just a shell in good condition was about £4000-5000 if I remember rightly! The newer bay window models were cheaper, but not by a whole lot.

I know it's not much help, but as they're rare and desireable you're not going to find one cheap unless it's more holes and rust than camper! Although you might have a bit more luck if you try looking for the newer water cooled models, I didn't really look into those.

There are no cheap campers anymore unless you get one that wants work doing to it.

Have you looked on Volkszone ? You may be able to pick a "newer" bay window up cheaper on there as board-stupid said, splits are just ridiculous prices these days.
......now officially dubless.

Or as I'm always bleating on, you could consider a T25. If you go for a bus/caravelle model the headlining/glass etc is already there then spend £200 on some wood and get busy building your own camping interior. Or just plump for a bolt in rock-n-roll bed and a pre-fab kitchen unit and off you go!!! I'd love a spilt or a bay but they were way out of my reach financially, I paid £800 for mine with 12months ticket but most importantly to me at the time........it's still aircooled!!!

Oh and I found it on ebay!!!

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Fancy going to Germany to pick up a splitty.

http://cgi.ebay.de/VW-Bus-T1-Bj-1966_W0QQitemZ220119881028QQihZ012QQcategoryZ9873QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Currently at £4,815.26 on ebay.de

There's loads of cheap campers at ebay.de, but you might want to translate the pages of course, as you might not be aware of things like non-runner or engine not included.  Better still, get someone that can read and speak German and you'll pick up a bargain.

Yup T3 (T25) is the future. Picked my panel van up for £900 with 12months ticket and 6 months tax. Spent about £2K including the van to get it is how it is now. Mines water cooled unlike Tobz's but is still a flat 4 boxer engine so makes all the right (and worrying) noises. THese also came with oil burners installed but by all accounts the factory dervs are pig slow, if you're lucky you may be able to find one someone has converted to a later TDI engine. I seem to recall a scoob engined one for sale recently for not much money.

For a purpose built one (Devon, Westy etc) expect to pay a fair bit more as they fetch a premium, specially if RHD as most are LHD imports. LHD isn't too bad in these as you rarley overtake anything in them! Check out eastfalia on google as he imports decent vans from germany and does them up if you want. Otherwise have a browse on www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum or www.club80-90.co.uk as these two forums specialise in the T3 and there are always a few for sale.

Finally you could lok at a T4, not that exciting but starting to get a following on the scene and more tuning/bolt on bits are becoming available. On the upside they're more refined and economical. A factory fitted camper will cost you an arm and a leg but a used panel or minibus shouldn't be much more than a T3 of the same spec unless it's the high output TDI.

Theres something to get you going bud.

Nick
