Just joined, mk2 16v with minor issues?
« on: 13 June 2007, 19:37 »
Just got my 90 spec 16v mk2.

Couple of problems.
When my main beams are on, my dash lights go out.
When i accelerate whilst turning from a standstill, i get a clicking, or ticking from the front.
Very tough gear change, about to fit a linkage repair kit

Also, the four wires coming from my MFA stalk (black, white, red, blue) are not connected, anyone know where they go to please? i don't really understand the haynes wiring diagram.

Apart from that its great,

thanks in advance, if anyone can help.

1. earthing problem i expect, do all the lights go off including the ones in the dash switches?
2. sounds like a knackered cv joint, do slow turns in a carpark while someone stands alongside to determine which side is at fault
3. see my linkage FAQ :)
4. There is a length of loom between the plug on the stalk to the fusebox, on a 90 spec MK2 its sperate from all the other wiring so easy to retrofit.  MK3s and later passats etc have the same fusebox, look for a VW or SEAT with an MFA and the hazard switch on top of the steering column like yours :)

Hi, thanks for that.
Now its like this,

1) Decided to keep the lights the way they are,  i quite like  the 'stealth mode' i get when i put the main beams on, lets me see more of the road.
2) It was a CV,  so i changed the right one, that got rid of the noise enough to allow me to hear the noise coming from the  left. Ah  well.
3) Linkage sorted now, all but the relay shaft bush. feels  like a new box again.
4) MFA wires now connected. everything working well, though i think i preferred it before i knew i was doing 28mpg.

Thanks for all that.
