Wishbone rear bush.
« on: 13 June 2007, 12:59 »
Hi, I recently purchased a pair of wishbones from GSF and fitted one yesterday...with a bit of bother - I had to swap the balljoint for my old one as the new one was to big to fit into the hub and the other problem I noticed is that the bolt hole in the rear bush is too large for the bolt, so even when fully tightened up the wishbone is still moving slightly.

Is there a variation in rear bushes for different age MK2's? Mines a 1986 GTi 16V.

Cheers,
Andy

I'll try and post a picture up in a minute so you can better underdstand what im talking about

I think the bushes should be the same for all mk2's.

Did you re-fit the metal sleeve?

GSF and Febi wishbones are reported to be a bit thinner than VAG ones, but I dont think they should move about

Heres a few pics of the old wishbone (left) and the new GSF part (right).

You can see on the old bush there is a metal insert, this stuck out both ends of the rear bush and located in the subframe (the insert was damaged when I removed it from the subframe), but, the new wishbone doesnt have this metal insert so it can move about 2-3mm back and fourth until it hits the bolt.

This is my first VW so Im not too sure on what parts are needed and what goes wrong so its a kind of trial and error thing, this being the first error  :embarassed:

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Andy

I did mine recently so I know exactly what you're talking about.
There should be a metal sleeve (as mentioned above) which slides over the bolt that goes through the rear wishbone bush. I got mine from the garage that loosened all my bolts prior to me fitting the wishbones so I'm afraid I can't help you with the part number.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

Ah...I broke it. What can I do now then?

Oh and they nearly always break on removal.

Brilliant, thanks alot lads!  I thought I'd bought the wrong wishbones! lol.

I'll order a few now then.

How do they fit into the subframe without bending the top and bottom though as the old one bent on removal.

Cheers,
Andy

You fit the wishbone first then tap the sleeve into place through the bush, it helps to line the bush up correctly and you'll know when its right as the sleeve will suddenly go all the way in.
