Golf 1.8T GTI - 150 or 180 BHP
« on: 11 June 2007, 21:24 »
Hi,

I am new to the forum.  I am looking to buy a 2000 - 2002 Golf 1.8T but have a few queries before I do.  I'd appreciate any help/advice you can give.

My real question is regarding the difference between the 150BHP and the 180BHP Golf's (aside from the extra 30 brake!).  I know that when you chip turbo engined cars, you can gain approx. 30BHP - is this what has been done to the 180?  Or are there other engine mods that achieve this?

Also, I would like to ask for some general info. such as mpg (both 150 and 180), problems to look out for and anything else you think may be useful.

Many thanks for any help in advance,

Chris

welcome along bud.

150s are standard 1.8Ts, 180bhp were the anniversary models with lips on the bumpers and sideskirts. same engines, different maps. anni's tend to be a fair bit dearer tho

close but no cigar. the 180bhp (AUQ code) engine in the anni was also used in standard 1.8T's from late 2002 onwards. it was just a slight software change (remap) from the AUM 150bhp golfs (2000-2002). there are earlier engines..

AGU (up to late '99) - K03 turbo, no VVT, Non DBW, 150bhp, 5speed
ARZ (99-00) - K03 turbo, no VVT, DBW, 150bhp, 5speed
AUM (late 00 - 02) - K03s turbo, VVT, DBW, 150bhp, 5speed
AUQ (late 02 onwards) - K03s turbo, VVT, DBW, 180bhp, 6speed

check the mk4 section for remapping guides etc.

Thanks for the replies.

Taking it one step further, if I got a 180 brake, can I chip/remap this further?  Or do I have to start looking at other mods to increase the horsepower?

Also, what should I look out for when buying?  Any turbo problems?  Any noise I should listen out for?

Thanks,

Chris

try that for common faults / problems and as topher said search the MKIV section; loads of threads on remaps, exhausts etc :afro:

This has probably confused you a bit.

You get standard GTI's with either 5 speed 150 bhp or 6 speed 180 bhp from 2002 onwards, the 180's use a bigger turbo.

You can also get an anniversary GTI with bodykit, BBS wheels etc with 180 bhp.

If you bought a 180 bhp car (6 speed) you could remap this very easily and see anywhere from 210-250 bhp depending on the remap.

Be careful when you're buying of cars advertised as a 180 when in fact they are a remapped 150. The obvious difference is the 6 speed box. My dad was looking to get a 180 when they were first out and it was pretty damn quick as standard if i remember rightly, there is lots of tuning potential with remaps, even bigger turbos, sports cat, turbo intake pipe etc.
