MOT & Rust Question

I have a 1988 MK2 1600 CL Golf. There is a rust hole about 4cm by 3 cm on the n/s sill, also a smaller 2cm by 1 cm hole on the drivers floor.

I was told that rust holes are OK in an MOT test as long as they are more than 30 cm of a structural component.

My question is what is meant by a structural component? Do they mean the front wishbone rear mounting point or the chassis cross member beam? If its the latter then the floor rust is 27 cm from the chassis beam but 32 cm from the wishbone mount.

The bodyshell of your car is a "structual component "... rust holes in the doors, wings, bonnet and boot lid are not failiure items, as long as they are secure, and wont injure anyone with sharp edges, however, if you have corrosion on your front wing, lets say, and its within 30cms of the suspension top mounting, then its a failiure.
Bolt on Xmembers that have corrosion, are best off being replaced rather than repaired.
To anwser your question, yes your sills are stuctual, and they will need welding up!
