Does this sound like Blue Temp Sender?

ok first things first:
8v GTI Digi. Timing and CO set up as per Rubjonnies guide 2 months ago, decoked afterwards to stop pinking on hot days. Always runs on 98RON fuel, oil level at Max.

Drove in excess of 100 miles today as we went to Bristol Volkfest. Car was doing a merry job of getting us up there, until we hit traffic and as usual the engine temp creeped up to 106 max. usually the car will run fine despite the high engine temp. Today however it was having none of it, and was nearly stalling when i dipped the revs to come to a halt, and was the exhaust was popping like a good'un under engine braking! Idle was very lumpy and it was pinking under load aswell.

I put this down to the high temperature as it got to 30 degrees earlier (said the aged MFA!), but sadly on the way home it was still suffering from all of the above even when i hadnt been sitting in traffic.

Could this be a faulty blue temp sender? 

p.s. to add insult to injury, i spent in excess of 6 hours in the week t-cutting and waxing the Golf, only for the roof-lining to come away and then it rained!

I'd also try flushing out the ISV with carb cleaner and yeah probably another blue VW temp sensor! got to love them

check the idle switch next, and if you aint put a new vw blue sender in yet, get it done

thanks guys, as usual the garage "cant find anything wrong" etc etc so i will be doing this one myself!

Forgot to mention the car smells rich when idling once warmed up...

Problem solved i think! Oil breather gromet has split causing the "flying saucer" to come adrift from the cam cover! Once i held the "flying saucer" to the cam cover it ran beautifully!

Jonny - Where abouts is the Blue Temp sender and what should I expect to happen with the idle switch?  My Gti is suffering with hunting - have cleaned the ISV and about to try out a second one as it didn't cure?

Then I'll be replacing the sender and getting it set up.

RaKeR: if its a digi 8v its in the coolant flange on the front of the head.  Theres 2 types, the early ones screw in and the later ones are a push fit, VW will sell ya one cheapy.

Ive changed the temp sensor and still no joy. I adjusted the co2/idle etc like it says in your 'how to' but its still pinking and the revs are dropping low.

the maf, isv, blue temp sensor are all fine

Im guessing the throttle switch connections that broke last time have worked loose or de-soldered by the exhaust heat?

How can i check if the throttle switch is working rubjonny (the mk2 God)

make sure they click at idle & wide open throttle, then get a multimeter on the plug to check they pass current at idle, stop when throttle is open slightly, then pass current again when the throttle is wide open.  Then last of all check for 5v on the connector from the ECU. If all that checks out I'd look into the knock sensor, the haynes details how you can check this, basically you disconnect the blue temp sender and check the timing advance at 2300rpm, then make sure it advances a further 30 degrees when its plugged back in.  If it only goes about 20degrees, slacken and re-torque the knock sensor bolt (20Nm (15lbf ft).  If there is non at all, the blue temp sensor or wiring to it is dead.
