CV Boot replacement and tracking
« on: 10 June 2007, 14:41 »
Been having a few 'wobble' issues at the top end of the speed limit (and over) and under braking.
Checked the discs for warping and nothing apparent, so was left with either balancing or tracking.  There is also a slight tendancy to pull right on a straight road, but nothing dramatic (and cars should do that anyway to a degree, for safety if I remember correctly - to avoid mounting the kerb!).

Went to Kwik Fit for a balancing and tracking check and got the car on the ramp, (first time I've been able to get a look underneath, and not too bad) started with the tracking and noticed the CV boot on the o/s had split, so to their credit they did not carry out the tracking as they said it would be advisable to do it after changing a CV boot.

Firstly is this true, and how hard is it to change the boot myself?  They said £5 for the part and £40 roughly to fit it.  Plus the £28 tracking and £5 per wheel balancing.

Secondly whilst the car was on the ramp I noticed that there are some holes in the protective 'layer' over the bottom of the car - wayoxl??????  Is this worth getting sorted out?

They want me to go back next weekend and get it sorted, as they couldn't fit the job in this weekend, and it is first come first served on Saturdays for that sort of job.

Any advice/similar situations?

Work wise - Yellow pages and Barclaycard about my limit!

I think you are right about the price though, for the amount and time and work better to let them struggle with it, they also have the right environment, I'd be working on the driveway!

They also said that the exhaust is blowing slightly where they attached the two new centre boxes and the old back box, heard it as we covered the exhaust, suggested sealing it or similar.  It was probably fitted incorrectly?  Is there a particular remedy for this?
