Im sure it was the mk1/2 for Vix as shes only a touch older than me (shes 21 i think  ;) )

its all about age imo ... what u were brought up with.

thanks scott, I like to think im just 21 but the birth certificate just dont lie. ::)

I dont think it is about age. I grew up admiring beetles and campers but im not that flippin old! I think with me its about making an old car look nice. I think the older cars have more character and I like things that are less common, they more likely to be admired and talked about then. 8)

while driving home today I actually counted more mark 2s then mark 3s which I thought was kinda weird. Then to confuse me more there were atleast 5 or 6 mark 2s in the scrappy and not a single mark 3.  Did VW not sell many?

but what if vw had made a mark 2 cab. would it be as good looking as the hard top is?
It would be more modern than the mk 1 so would that have influenced u gibby? :P

No, not influenced at all, always liked mark1 shape and even if there was a mark2 cab I reckon I would still go for a mark1 but that's just my opinion. Maybe age has something to do with it I dunno, I just remember always having a soft spot for all mark1 golfs, just loved the shape, can't explain why.

I like the mark1 shape and also like the mark2 shape, it's hard to imagine what a mark2 cab would look like and I think VW knew the mark1 cab would have been hard to beat so didn't bother but I'm sure there must  be some mark2 cab drawings kicking about in an archive draw somewhere. How much would they be worth !
......now officially dubless.

I think age and when you were brought up has got something to do with it, but maybe not that much.
Being born when I was, I grew up with VW's in the family from a P reg Mk1 to a Derby, to a Mk1 Jetta to a Santana (Passat saloon). So that was a major influence, but I could have quite easily become a (cough) XR2 or XR3i fan (cough, washes mouth out with soap  :-X ).
So, I like the Mk2 and Mk1 (preferring them to the others), hence I have my eye open for a nice Mk1 now.

My mk1 is a year younger than me so I don't think its an age thing!  :D

The mk3 plus is more of a family car in my opinion. The m1 & 2 are more about driving than smoothness and comfort.

Uh oh I'm gonna get a roasting he he!!  :D

I've driven the 8v but most confess not the 16v. The 8v was really sluggish compared to my mk1 & 2.   :P

I'd rather dive a mk3 or up on the motorways as it is a smoother drive but a lot less fun. Maybe a vr6 would be diff i dunno  :D
