8v and 16v brake hose connections
« on: 08 June 2007, 21:27 »
I have an early Mk2 86 8V and am looking at putting a g60 front brake conversion on ready for a later engine transplant.

I have 8v front calipers at present which will be replaced by 16V calipers/hubs (and then G60 carriers).

I have goodridge stainless brake hoses to my existing 8V front calipers.

My question is:

Are the brake hose connections to the calipers and brake pipes the same on a 16V as an 8V - or have I get to get a goodridge 16v hose kit ?

Many thanks !

An update ..........

I now have the 16v calipers for the G60 carrier install.

However, the connections to the calipers are different between the 8V and 16V - damn !

The existing 8V hose ends (goodridge)  screw INTO the calipers themselves with NO prongs inside.

The 16V hose ends (some no name braided hoses that came with the secondhand calipers) screw over a connection which has a small holed probe jutting out of the connection. This then goes to the caliper proper via a small length of looped metal pipe (to stop strain/vibration from the caliper I guess). The connection from the looped pipe then screws into the caliper and has another of these holed pronbes at it's end which goes into the caliper.

This suggests that the 16V calipers require different goodridge braded hoses for a 16V rather than an 8V - yet the goodridge site seems to list the same hoses for both 8V and 16V.

Am I missing something here ?

I'm 99% sure 90 spec mk2 16v calipers have the same fittings. It would seem your new calipers are not mk2 16v ones
I've got Polo front calipers on mine for my 256mm setup that have the same banjo connection as you describe, my new mk4 Golf rear calipers also have this connection.

See below, I was wrong.

simply unscrew those metal pipes, then the goodridge hoses fit :)
