Bought 93 GTi on the way home it BROKE!
« on: 02 June 2007, 14:56 »
How bad is my luck.

Tested a Golf GTi 2.0 93 three door. Nice car, has some work, but nice. SO test drove the car on the first night. Seemed fine. So I put down a deposit, and the second night went to pay the rest. Everything was sweet. I stopped at the Fuel station to fill up and check oil. Then I took the motorway home. About 23miles away. 5Miles outside of my house clutch started to slip.. SO I took my foot of the gas a bit.. and it sorted itself out. Thought the clutch is getting hot and I can just get the clutched replaced. No biggie.. But then.. it started to slip out of 5th gear. NOT COOL. So stopped at the house.. very angry. Tried to phone the guy who sold me the car - Phone is off!!

Left 2x Voicemail messages. (Bit rude messages)

Went back to the car, started the car and it made a awful metal scraping noise.. By the clutch/gearbox. If the clutch pedal is pressed in the noise stops. But when you leave the clutch it starts to make the scraping noise again.

Got a hold of the guy who sold me the car - didn’t want to give me a refund.. GREAT!

So phoned some Guys and they think its the Gearbox and Clutch - just what I need. Why did I not pick this up while test-driving the car??

Gutted

I feel for you! It always tougher when purchasing older cars. Especially "GTi's" as they have probably been kaned all their life (that is only an assumption btw).

Gutted for ya dude

Had this problem on my old Mk 2 1.3. Started doing that horrible noise! I worked for VW at the time and they ripped the gearbox apart, new clutch and that but couldn't find the problem  :undecided: In the end i ruined the car and scrapped it so i never did find out.

Not a lot of help eh

Could be the diff in the gearbox as they are prone to breaking up in the mk3 gearbox

I had a similar problem with my Mk4 Polo, and it seems VW had an issue building robust gearboxes at that time. I was told by a gearbox/clutch specialist that VWs of that era are prone to gearbox failure.
Mine made noise when the engine was ticking over, then the noise stopped when you pressed the clutch. If you drove in 5th gear for any length of time it would pop-out. Found I had an oil leak from the gearbox which had lead to 5th gear getting worn (it's the first one to go). so it would have meant a new or recon box.

Unlucky mate. I sold mine before fixing it. Hope you have better luck.

PART2:

So after looking at the PARTS for sale I found HARDCOR3 selling a GTi 2.0 8v engine and gearbox.. Thought sweet! Whent to him, bought the engine & Gearbox. Came back home loaded the engine in the back of the MK3 and got it towed to the garage - The machanic looked at the gearbox and saw there was a whole at the back where something broke out?!?! SO we needed to replace gearbox and clutch as the clutch was slipping.. He said it will be less work putting in the other enigne..(other reasons  - Oil coming out of the back of the headgasket..) So thats what he did. After speaking to him yesterday the engin is put in and started. WOW! But... But.. The car doesnt want to idle correctly.. (I think I need to take it to a proper VW Centre so they can check the CO levels and tune it that way..) But hopefully I can get the car back this afternoon!!!

Will post some pics of my car when I have it..
