electrical prob...
« on: 01 June 2007, 18:31 »
had my hew(ish!) JVC head unit fitted for about a week now...
turned fan on full blast for a bit of cool air and the display went really dim, tuned back to number 2 (or 1 or off) and the display is OK.

I have a ignition live coming from the fan switch for the HU (Old HU used this also) could it be this?

Also though, if I have my fan on 2 or 3 then my oil temp rises by at least 2 or mpre degrees...

I'm guessing they are related, so is it an earth problem?
Or is it directly related to the ignition live for the HU??

Looks like you maybe pulling too many amps when both head unit and fan is switched on simultenoulsy,  or as you say a poor connection to ground,  to eliminate the earth problem run a length of 1.5 mm multicore from a decent earth point,  there is one situated i behind the head unit where the dash mount connects to the bulkhead,  i would then run permanent live to the radio direct from the spare slots at fusebox,  ensure you connect a 10 amp spade fuse in series for safety,  check then the operation of all ancillaries to ensure smooth operation,  if the faults U describe disappear you know it's either a fauty earth or the circuit that is tied into is pulling too many amps, by the way tyng into a permanent liev will require U to manually switch off your HD

If it is a 90 mph per hour wind and you drive your car at 90mph downwind, if you stick your head outside would you feel the wind?

it does have a permanent live as well?

I'll have a look see if I can find a better ignition live (fag lighter - never use it??) and run the earth in as you suggested.

cheers

Your headunit actually draws power from its permanent live connection, not the ignition live (which is why the "high" power Alpines recommend that you give them their own dedicated fused feed from the battery if using the internal amp).

that confuses things then...
It has a perm live wired thru the ISO connector - As standard..

The only difference from standard is the ignition live.

So you reckon that I run a new live direct from the battey to the perm live of the HU? Do I leave the ignition live as it is? What about the ground? I'll run a new ground I think anyway - some where close as suggested systemseiko.
