Of that list, the only one worth considering would be the Conti SportContact2.  However, the Conti SportContact3 has been out for quite a while now, so someone is trying to flog you old stock.  The SportContact3 seems to have a slightly softer compound than the CSC2, and so might address some of the low speed ride harshess.

My cars only a few weeks old and they came with Conti Sport Contact2s. Does this mean VW have a stock pile of old tyres that they're fitting to new cars? Or are Continental still producing the SC2 as well as the SC3?

Hmmm, dunno??  The SportContact 2s haven't been viewable on the official Continental website for months (Nov 06 was when I first viewed the SportContact3s - http://www.contisportcontact3.co.uk/).

Used the typical farmer method and threw the tyre into a water tank, found a tiny pinprick on the top of the sidewall where it meets the tread, I seem to remember having a sidewall puncture before and the tyre place refusing to mend it saying it was too dangerous 

OK, technically, any sidewall damage is illegal to repair.  However, if it is a nigh-on brand new tyre, and perfect in all other respects, then some other friendly tyre dealers might attempt a repair.  Indeed, I have repaired some tyres in similar circumstances, but only after agreeing no invoice, no comback on me, and - only after establishing their driving style.  If I ever had any doubts about either the tyre, or the driver - then I refused the repair.

So given i'll probably have to shell out for a new tyre after only 3 weeks, shall i stick with the dunlop sportmax's or go for one of the more highly recommended ones? given that after 1200 miles i wont be swapping in an axle pair!

Even though I think Dunlops are Satan's tyres  , I would strongly recommend sticking with matched pairs on axles.

Just a thought - give Dunlop UK a phone, and see if you can blag a freebie out of them - big it up to them, how marvelous their tyres are, and how surprised you are that such a new tyre has let you down . . . etc

according to my stealer you dont need to fit a matching pair of tyres, but then they are barstewards!

Ok ok, I couldn't handle the pressure you were giving me Sean,  so I've just been for a walk out the office. All 4 tyres were made in Mar 07 and I've just looked at the Conti website and they're still on there alongside the Conti SC3s.

Doh, you're right, sorry forgot the first two digits are weeks of the year not month!  :embarassed:  Car was week 13 build so the tyres were 10 weeks old, to be expected I suppose.
