Can steel wheels be refurbished?
« on: 30 May 2007, 19:11 »
Got a set of original steel wheels on my '91 MKII GTi 8v and because it was standing for a while and was not pampered by previous owners, the wheels and looking a bit woeful.

I went out to scrub them with pan scourer type thing and noticed that they are not just steel, but have a lacquered top coat?

So not wanting to scratch the hell out of them, but wishing to remove the rust spots I am not sure of the best way to clean them, any ideas or suggestions would be great?

Also the centre caps are looking a bit sorry aswell.  Think I need to sand/rub them down and have them resprayed? Would rather buy a brand new set to be honest if they are available!

Just sand them down and then pain them in hammerite! My old steels were like this, and looked great! Also, if you curb them or whatever, you can touch them up really easily!
