Going crazy.
« on: 29 May 2007, 16:12 »
A few weeks ago I posted a query about the ignition of my mkII 8v gti. Basically, I loose all ignition (all warning lights, engine) intermittently but radio and headlights still work (so cannot be an earthing issues). At first its just momentary loss, and you hear a clicking from one of the relays in the fuse box - I think this could be the one for the fuel pump when the circuit is broken- which then gets more and more frequent.

The thing is, this gets worse and worse the longer the car is driven for until eventually it cuts out every time you re-start it.

I have replaced the ignition switch and checked the wire which comes from the Alternator. Any ideas folks?

Otherwise the garage will replace everything at huge cost.

Have you replaced the fuel pump relay could be going mad and shorting the ignition out.

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

I had same problem, think it was only £11 from dealers for a new one

almost definately could be an earthing issue.....you have 2 earths.

battery > chassis
battery > engine

the engine isn't connected to the chassis in any way, rubber mounts seperate it from the chassis. your headlights, stereo etc. are all grounded off the chassis. but if the engine earth is snapped/loose, it describes everything you mentioned. double check it!

Thanks for those suggestions. If relay and it was shorting ignition, would the ignition come back on again or would it just blow the fuse? I have noticed it a bit warm and whenever the problem occurs, a sharp kick to that area make it come back, if only for a few seconds!

Will definately check the earth too.

it switches off all non-essential components while the engine is turning over, things like the wipers, headlights, blower etc :)
