Car is in the garage
« on: 29 May 2007, 12:11 »
Well hello again.

I passed my driving test last Thursday, so i thought i better get the car checked over before i take it on the road.

Just got a phone call from the garage and he said that it needs a new radiator, new fan belt, new cam shaft, new back box, and new front brake pads.

He's charging me £350 inc VAT and labour, i thought it sounded good?

Apart from that, i should be driving my Golf for the first time tomorrow

You could probably do it all yourself for around 100 quid, but i guess the fact you took it to a garage means that you didn't want to!

Yup, and complete lack of knowledge! Also, the chap in the garage said he'll have it done for tomorrow :)

sounds cheap. A good garage will show you the old parts removed and point out the faults.

i third the decision........camshafts rarely break, and if it did, you'd have a rather massive bill - new valves, seals etc. i think hes telling porkies. i would ask him how hes come to the conclusion the camshaft needs replacing!! also get the timing belt done at the same time.

roughly

£55 - radiator (diy time - 15mins)
£6   - aux belt (diy time - 15mins)
£30 - backbox (diy time - 15 mins)
£10 - brake pads (diy time - 15 mins)

and its all a quick 1 hour job to do yourself. buy yourself a haynes and start diy'ing, you're going to be repairing an old car a lot, so your going to need to learn sometime, why not now, save £200. also, £200 @ about £30p/h....its not 7 hours worth of work!

Camshaft or camBELT? the second sounds more likely tbh, and fits with the pricing far better.
