Help needed in ordering a new GTI
« on: 28 May 2007, 14:20 »
Hi everyone!

I have been looking in this excellent forum for a little while now and have finally plucked up the courage to submit my first post.

I have always wanted to own a Golf GTI and have finally decided to buy one.  I currently have a 04 Golf 2.0 GT TDI with 39000 miles on the clock.

I want a 5 door DSG in Tornado red with highline computer and Armrest with iPod connection.

I have been to a couple of stealers and this is what they said:

Dealer 1:

4 month wait for a factory GTI.
NO discounts as they are in demand and it being a factory job.  I tried very hard but he wouldn't budge.
Won't give me a trade in value for my car.  Will only do it when GTI is made.  He asked me what I thought it was worth now, so I said 10k.  He said that was reasonable so I assume that it is worth 10k now.

Dealer 2:

12-14 week wait for a factory GTI.
After trying my best for a discount he said he would knock 165 quid off and throw in the Autoglym Lifeshine treatment system (worth £250 but not too bothered about that really).
He did get back to me with a trade in value for my car though.  He said it was worth £9600 now and estimated that it would be £9000-9100 when the GTI is made.

Sorry if this seems a little long winded/not going anywhere.  What I really want to know is if I am being offered a good deal or am I being ripped off.  Has anyone bought a new factory ordered GTI recently from a dealer and  managed to get better discount than I have been offered?  Is the part exchange value of my car reasonable or should I expect more?

Any help will be much appreciated.

If it's a standard GTI then you should get a discount, even on a factory order of around at least £1k

If it's the ED30 GTI then you will struggle to get anything off at all.

I too had a MKV GTTDI 54reg with DSG, Leather and 19K miles on the clock. At the end of March I got £12K trade in and they said it was depreciating at around £200/ month. Move forward 5 months to the end of August and that would translate to £11k trade in. DSG adds around £500 as does leather - so If your car has neither I guess around £10k in August would be about right! :nerd:

Thanks Hurdy for the reply.

Its the standard GTI I am after.  So you think I should be able to get 1k off the price?  I will have to haggle a bit harder then.  If I could get 10k for my car in August/September then I would be very pleased but the dealers are saying that it is worth that now and only 9k in August/September.  It will have done 43000 miles by then and be 3.5 years old. My car has no extras.  I guess its not too bad as it works out to be about 48% of its original price.

That has helped me a lot, cheers.

If you dont mind a proper UK spec import that hasnt been sat in a desert in Dubai then Motorprovider come highly recommended - about 3-4k off the normal price for the normal GTI

Orca,
why not look on availabilty on near as new 2nd handers, no waiting times and you dont loose £2000 as soon as you leave the forecourt.  Seriuosly is it worth it just for the new car odour???

I have just ordered a 5-door GTI in Diamond Black with DSG, cruise control, MF Steering Wheel, Ipod prep, and 18" Monza II. Post-haggling, the total price was £23k on the road - a saving of £1,207 against the list price.

Delivery for 1 September, allegedly!

I'd suggest using the What Car Target price as a starting point when you haggle - go in with a copy showing £890 discount, and tell them you want to use the dealership, but can't afford to through away money......! My dealer was actually very easy to do business with - but was very clear that I wouldn't get any discount on an Ed30!

Good luck.

Thank you all for your replies!

I did consider getting a nearly new GTI but the prices for used are still on the high side at dealers.  I would prefer at least a 06 plate with under 10k miles.  I only reason why I am going through the dealer route rather than a broker/supermarket is that it's the easiest way to get rid of my car.  I don't want the hassle of selling my car privately and am willing to take a small hit when part exchanging it.

I have just looked at Drive The Deal brokers website and the quote I get is a saving of £1165.  If only they do part exchange!  I will take a copy of What Car magazine and the DTD quote to the dealers.  It does appear that discounts are possible, its just negotiating at the right place at the right time I guess.

I have seen these motor provider people. Are they really any good? What warranty and come backs do ya get?

What happens with resale - is it easy enough?

I got a 3 door GTI, steel grey, leather, 6 CD, reversing sensors, armrest and 18" wheels in March this year (ordered December).  I asked two dealers to match the best discount I could get from an internet broker for a UK car.  The first offered no discount, the other matched the broker and gave me £1,200 discount. I nearly didn't bother after the first knock back, only goes to show you should shop around!

I ordered mine through TSB car select. You have to be a TSB customer, credit card or something, but the service was pretty good. I think they will do trade-ins as well. Basically, they operate as a broker and have pretty good finance deals and discounts, I got about £1k off a 3-dr manual GTi. They also gave me a delivery date of July 2nd, which was 8 weeks from my order date. They offered me the best finance deal compared to all the other internet brokers, and they give you free 'transported' delivery, not 'driven' like some of them.
