running problems
« on: 26 May 2007, 22:10 »
hey

Lately my golf has been making a high pitched noise. It gets higher the higher the revs get but stops as soon as I put the clutch pedal in. It doesnt happen all the time but seems to only start when I drive in lower gears for a length of time and seems worse in the gears that I have driven in mostly so if i've been mainly in 3rd then that will create the loudest sound and 2nd and 4th will be slightly better with 5th not making the noise at all. Plus the other night 3rd was making a grating sound aswell, as though 2 loose discs were rubbing against each other which also stopped once i put the clutch in. The car is a 1990 8v gti engine code pb.

Anyone got any idea whats going on?

hi mate
sounds like bearings in the gearbox or may be the clutch release bearings, maybe try changing the oil in your gearbox first

Could be something as simple as an alternator belt.

Do you think that putting the clutch in would stop a noisey alternator belt ?

Well yeah, because sometimes the belts only squeek at higher rpm, and so by putting the clutch in the belt stops squeeking with the engine only being around 1k rpm!

That all depends on if the revs are allowed to drop when the clutch is disengaged, e11ie have you try'd dipping the clutch while keeping the revs up ? Do you know the last time that your gearbox oil was changed ?

i would look at changing or at least checking the gearbox oil

it aint the release bearing either as it would whine when the clutch is pedal is pressed

does it do it in neutral? or only when in gear and on the move

yeah it only does it when it is in gear and I'm driving along. Dont know if it has anything to do with it but before this problem came along there was a rhythmical rubbing sound coming from the cam belt direction. Iv done a bit of research and its an 020 gearbox with a AUG 05040 code and Iv got myself 2 quarts of MTL redline but I can't find any gearbox flush newhere!
