steelies handle like alloys?
« on: 25 May 2007, 17:53 »
As above do steel wheels handle as well as alloys with exactly the same size? i know its a strange question its just somebody said that alloys are lighter which makes  a difference  :undecided:  i was considerng some g60 steels. if anyone has any
i must buy a new car!

Some alloys are lighter (depends on the wheel) and it can make a tiny difference, its got to do with the unsprung weight, the ideal being to reduce it as much as possible !

doubt you'll notice much difference to be honest. but oz superleggras are damn light and its rotational weight that makes the difference.

To get technical, the heavier the wheel, the greater the gyroscopic force, which will cause the wheel to want to turn about its normal axis.
The engine also suffers these forces. Theat is why when you see a high powered large engined(V8) rear wheel drive car take off in a wheel spin, the rear end of the car will crab out to the side.
Just a little more useless, but interesting info!!!

i definilty noticed an improvement in handling, accelleration & braking going from 13" steels to 15" alloys (same rolling radius) :)
Id assume there would also be an improvement with steels -> alloys of the same size, but dunno if it would be as much.  Might be more though, I'd expect 15" steels to weigh more than 13"?

Have made exactly that switch and noticed no difference at all.  If anything I think the steelies are lighter than the Sebrings, at least they certainly feel it!
