Its Mk2 Question Time!
« on: 23 May 2007, 22:34 »
Hi all!

Been running the 1.6 Driver Mk2 for a while now... And just have a few Q's!

1. Have any of the GTi editions got faster steering? Moved to this from an Alfa 155 - 2.1 turns lock to lock - and I think I'm driving a bus!

2. Is it a big/massive job to change from discs front drums rear to discs all round? E.g. GTi bits?

3. Whats best to clean the engine bay with?

4. Did VW ever make sound insulation stuff for under bonnet?

And if anyone has roof lining (with sunroof section, preferably black), 90 spec arches + side trim (seem to be standard requirements!!) or cheap alloys, PM me!

Furthermore... Dad just got a MkV ED.30...

hallo,

yeah they made sound insulation for under the bonnet, best palce to look is ebay... seen a couple up there this month

second, jetwash the engine and scrub it with engine cleaner, sure local factors will have something suitable...

other than that im not 100% sure bout the breaks and steering, mine seems pretty light but mine is a gti... get a smaller steering wheel

rob

noble tuned - and still not fast enough!

1. Yes - Power steering models are 3.1 turns lock to lock.

2. No. 8V Gti vented discs and pads are a straight swop up front and you can do the rears but you won't stop any quicker for it and without careful attention the handbrake will be worse.

3. Elbow grease! Personally I would use a jet wash, water gets everywhere. And is it me or has Gunk etc got really expensive.

4. As below. Look on ebay, fitted to Diesel models, can go for daft money

I found Gunk cleaner to be completely useless when cleaning my new engine
I used a decent Orange citrus cleaner :

That stuff along with a decent gripping cotton towel is the danglies mate

I think Gunk's recipe must have changed then. And the Orange stuff is even more expensive £17.00 + VAT and it's all going down the drain  :undecided:

 Gunk always worked a treat for me, just had to make sure you got the engine nice and warm before applying it. Maybe i won't be so lucky with my next can!

1. get power steering rack setup
2. leave as is for hassle free rear brakes. or get a complete gti rear beam & swap it all over in one go
3. get it steam cleaned
4. late 16v's can with underbonnet insulation

i used gunk and a brush to clean mine up, worked perrrfect, then when i ran out of that, i rather dangerously just used petrol, which worked just as well.
