18" Monza Alloys - Corrosion
« on: 23 May 2007, 21:51 »

Had my GTi in for its first service a couple of weeks ago and gave it a wash and a good look over before taking it in to the dealer.  Hadn't washed it for a while and was shocked to see that two of the 18" Monza alloys (front nearside and rear offside) had corroded quite noticeably round the edge of the rims.  Strangely, the wheels on the other corners were unmarked.

Mentioned it on the phone to the Service Department before taking the car in and they assured me they'd check it out.  Reminded them again when I dropped it off and came back to pick it up later that day expecting to either have an argument or be told that I'd have to wait several weeks for new ones to be ordered.  Much to my surprise two brand new wheels had been fitted, same day, no questions, no problem.

Anyway, apart from saying something positive about a dealer for a change, I'd be interested to know if anyone else on the forum has had the same problem with their Monzas in such a short period of time or have I just been unlucky?  The corrosion was in the form of small pits, through the lacquer and into the alloy, all round the circumference of the rims.  I thought I'd left rotting alloys behind when I sold my Lexus!!

Known and regular problem - just make sure there's no 'kerbing' evidence or the dealer will not want to know.....

I am surpised they still fit that kind of polished and laquered wheel - as it must cost a fortune in warranty costs will they ever learn?

It is something Toyota and lexus are very bad at - and also good, in that several IS200 and MR2 / Celicas seem to get a new set free every year due to the bubbling. No questions asked and with a healthy dollop of kerbing in some cases.

You're dead right about the Lexus IS200, Charri.

I had an IS200SE before the GTI and the wheels corroded at an amazing rate.  Having said that, it was a very well known problem and there was never any argument about having them replaced under warranty.
