Clutch cable

When i press the cluthch pedal, it's not smooth(up of down).
As a result gear changes can be a bit jerky if not carefull.
I think i need to lubricate the clutch cable.
What's the easiest way to do this, and what do i use?

just replace it , not too hard or expensive.

i've been told that a new cable has just been fitted, when i bought the car. As it was picked up on the RAC report

Sounds like its worn a groove ... mine did... replaced it last friday!

... its a b@stard to replace them ... never done it before LOL ... what a PAIN!! and I lost half my popper things for the plastic covering the pollen filter! :(

Don't get me started on the sh*gging clutch cable...

I've owned mine for 18 months - the month after I got it the cable started creaking and then it snapped.  Had anew one fitted - it still creaks and is not smooth.   Took it to the garage and they couldn't find anything wrong.  I gave up.   Someone said I should've got a non self adjusting cable fitted - I got a VW replacement put on and apparently they are rubbish as they tend to stick and sieze.   Maybe I need to get someone else to look at it...

What's this 'warn groove' all about?

Are you sure the clutch itself is ok? if it is very knackered then it will eat through cables.

My MK3 is on it's 3rd cable and is ready for a fourth. They seam to work well for about a year and then the pedal starts to feel stiff and you can hear the cable creaking.

Once you getthe hang of it, it's not difficult to change.

I may try a non VW cable next time round.

My cable is doing those exact things aswel. Maybe its time i changed mine. As far as i know, the car has never had a new clutch cable and its done 65K.

How much is a new VW cable? (Car is a '97 Mk3 gti 8v)

My 8v has done 65k on the original clutch, so it may well be  due a replacement...

When I replaced the cable last year I paid ?95 for a VW self adjusting cable.  That price was for the part AND fitting.   I'm not that mechanically minded so I wouldn't do it meself! ;)

where the cable wears a groove in the plastic and it bites against it...

... hopefully u see what i mean...

it makes it less smooth and "bitty"
