my car is due its mot. does anyone know how much vw charges or should i stay away from them?

They can only charge the standard fee for the test itself, it's what the hourly rate for other work is that'll have you.... IIRC the test is about £50 and most dealers charge about £60ph for work. If you're sure the car will go through, by all means I'd get the main dealer to do it, but if they find stuff you'll be paying........

I paid £40 at my local garage for an MOT, think this is about average

Yea go the an MOT specialist. They charge less, usually about £40 and some have special offers etc. Also they wont charge you the earth for any faults.

MOT test fee for me the other was £50, no work to be done though... She sailed through.
